BRUCE CONNER & TERRY RILEY - "LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS"

Being a fan of both experimental film and music, I'm always a big fan of works of art that combine the two mediums. One of my personal favorites is "Looking For Mushrooms", a brilliant psychedelic melding of the jittery, esoteric visuals of artist/filmmaker Bruce Conner and the jittery, esoteric sounds of composer Terry Riley. I don't think I've ever seen two artists complement each others' style quite as well as in this film.

Accessible via the link below is an MPEG copy of the film, transferred from my personal VHS copy. As a result, the quality is a bit lacking, but I have never found this film available anywhere else on the web (i.e. YouTube, P2P sites, etc.).

Conner released a DVD containing his film "Crossroads" and the two versions of "Looking For Mushrooms" (the film above & an endlessly looping version) a couple years ago, available exclusively through the Kohn Gallery for $35 + s/h. I can't justify spending $35 for a single DVD, but if I can get three or more people to pitch in $5 each, I'll buy the disc & burn copies for each of the contributors. Let me know if you're interested.

There is more info about the DVD (including cover art) and some pictures of Bruce Conner and Terry Riley during the making of the film available on Riley's website.

Looks amazing! Tanner and I are actually planning to showcase Riley's "A Rainbow in Curved Air," and use it as the jumping off point for one of our oh-so-fun, oh-so-trippy theme nights. Stay tuned (literally)...
